Former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Tim Kennedy was shot three times in the leg during an ambush in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in mid-September, according to a report from Reuters. Kennedy was working under contract for private security and logistics firm Vectus Global when his team was attacked. The incident resulted in 20 casualties, including seven deaths, but Kennedy survived and is receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.
Vectus Global was founded by Erik Prince, the founder of the former private military contractor Blackwater. The company reportedly holds a $300-$400 million agreement over five years to protect mining operations in the region. Kennedy, a retired mixed martial artist who competed for Strikeforce titles and served in the United States Army Special Forces, retired from MMA competition in 2017.
