With three laps left in Stage 1, Bowman lost control of his No. 48 Chevrolet while battling for fifth position and overcorrected into the right rear of Wallace's No. 23 Toyota. Both cars slammed hard into the outside wall and the inside barrier, while Byron was unable to avoid the collision.
