“Not Just One Person”- RFK Competition Director Shuts Down Talk of Single Mastermind Behind Talladega Fuel Stunner
Key Things to Know
  • Josh Sell rejected claims that a single mastermind devised RFK Racing's Talladega fuel-strategy breakaway.
  • The decision came together as a spontaneous team effort within an eight-to-ten-minute window during the race.
  • Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher, and Ryan Preece swept Stage 1 after building a 40-second lead.
The Story in 60 Seconds

RFK Racing competition director Josh Sell clarified that the team's dramatic breakaway strategy at Talladega Superspeedway was a full group effort rather than the work of a single mastermind. Drivers Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher, and Ryan Preece executed an impromptu three-car draft during Stage 1, leaving the rest of the field trailing by more than 40 seconds while rivals were focused on saving fuel.

Sell revealed on SiriusXM NASCAR that the strategy was decided within an eight-to-ten-minute window rather than planned in advance. Although the trio swept the stage with Buescher leading Preece and Keselowski, a multi-car crash with five laps remaining relegated Keselowski to 24th and Buescher to 32nd, while Preece finished 13th.
