The Story in 60 Seconds

Riley Herbst avoided season-ending surgery following a severe crash at the Talladega Superspeedway YellaWood 500, returning to race at Martinsville despite managing a torn forearm ligament. Herbst sustained the injury when his No. 35 Toyota suffered a failure in its brakes and transmission before slamming into the inside wall. While he noted the car's cockpit looked visually rough, he remained measured when commenting on the wreckage, which NASCAR took to its R&D Center.

Herbst confirmed that hand surgeons determined his torn forearm ligament would not require an operation, avoiding an estimated 12-week recovery. He managed pain during practice laps at Martinsville while working with Atrium Health, 23XI Racing, and Toyota. The driver is focusing on finishing the final two races of the season before his scheduled move to Legacy Motor Club for 2027.
