Key Things to Know
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. left Dale Earnhardt Inc. after the 2007 season due to ownership disputes with Teresa Earnhardt.
  • Legal disputes over the Earnhardt name prompted Junior to temporarily race using only "Dale Jr." on his car.
  • Dale Jr. moved to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 to drive the No. 88 Chevrolet.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Dale Earnhardt Jr. addressed his departure from Dale Earnhardt Inc. following the death of his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., in 2001. Disagreements over company ownership and rights to the Earnhardt name created tension between Junior and his stepmother, Teresa Earnhardt. Due to legal complexities surrounding the surname, Dale Jr. even removed "Earnhardt" from his car's name rail before ultimately leaving DEI after the 2007 season to join Hendrick Motorsports.

Away from DEI, Dale Jr. built independent ventures alongside his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, co-founding JR Motorsports and launching Dirty Mo Media. Dale Jr. noted that while he and Teresa remain estranged and have not spoken in a long time, he still holds some hope for a future reconciliation.
