The man who helped NASCAR find its voice on national television is now facing a challenge no championship, victory, or microphone can overcome. Darrell Waltrip spent decades making himself heard, turning his confidence into a trademark and his racing success…

NASCAR Hall of Fame executive Mike Helton delivered an emotional tribute honoring three-time Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip for his lasting impact on the sport. The tribute took place at a charity gathering following the Waltrip family's announcement of his diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration, complicated by possible chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Helton praised Waltrip for expanding NASCAR's reach across national entertainment platforms and bridging the gap to modern stardom.
Waltrip earned 84 Cup victories, including three championships and the 1989 Daytona 500, before transitioning into a prominent broadcasting career with FOX Sports from 2001 through 2019. Known for his signature catchphrase, Waltrip was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.
