NASCAR has issued a $50,000 fine to Front Row Motorsports driver Zane Smith following a post-race altercation with Carson Hocevar at Phoenix Raceway. After Sunday's Freeway Insurance 500 concluded, Smith drove up behind Hocevar's car on the cool-down lap and rammed into the back of him in apparent retaliation for earlier on-track contact.
The penalty was reinforced by prior tensions between the competitors, who were previously summoned to the NASCAR hauler following a confrontation at Chicagoland. NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Communications Mike Forde confirmed that the fine was imposed because Smith disregarded earlier warnings regarding their ongoing rivalry. Front Row Motorsports has the option to appeal the penalty.
