Trae Young did not leave Atlanta looking to burn a bridge. Even after the Hawks moved on from their longtime point guard, Young made it clear that he wanted to keep his relationship with the city and its fans intact.
Washington Wizards point guard Trae Young stated "you never know" regarding a potential future return to the Atlanta Hawks during an appearance on The Baller Alert Show. While leaving the door open for later in his career, Young emphasized that his current focus remains entirely on Washington, noting that he intentionally avoided burning bridges when departing Atlanta.
The Hawks traded Young to Washington on January 9, 2026, receiving CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert in return. Young subsequently signed a four-year, $212 million extension with the Wizards on June 22, 2026, while the Hawks have restructured their roster around Jalen Johnson and rookie Kingston Flemings.
