The Detroit Pistons need more from Ausar Thompson on offense. Thankfully, he knows it—and was willing to call himself out in the media.

Maxwell Ogden argues that Ausar Thompson's candid self-criticism explains why the Detroit Pistons remain committed to developing him as a two-way player. Following Detroit's 97-89 victory against the Charlotte Hornets on October 28, Thompson publicly acknowledged his passive approach on offense, noting that opposing defenses do not view him as a scoring threat. Thompson signed a five-year, $155 million contract extension with the Pistons earlier in the year.
Despite recording seven points, nine rebounds, and eight assists against Charlotte, Thompson struggled early with just one field goal attempt and three turnovers in the first half. He recovered with an efficient second half, helping Detroit improve its team shooting to 51.2 percent from the floor. Ogden writes that Thompson's awareness of his limitations reinforces Detroit's faith in his offensive evolution.
