Contract extension talks between the New York Knicks, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Josh Hart have reached an impasse, according to reporting by ESPN's Shams Charania. With team owner James Dolan refusing to exceed the NBA's second apron, Charania reports that both players could potentially be traded by the February deadline if agreements are not reached. Towns is eligible for a four-year, $276 million max extension but was offered $200 million, while Hart is eligible for a four-year, $131.2 million deal.
Writer Charlie Kuster argues that New York must prioritize reaching a middle ground with Towns, suggesting a four-year deal worth $220 million to $230 million. Kuster notes that retaining Towns is vital to maintaining the team's floor spacing, even if salary cap realities ultimately force the franchise to move on from Hart.
