The Orlando Magic want to be built on their defense. But they are still searching for consistency after a rough season opener against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Orlando Magic are working to address defensive breakdowns following a season-opening loss to the Atlanta Hawks. A late miscommunication between Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero allowed Nickeil Alexander-Walker to hit a decisive 3-pointer from a Jalen Johnson assist. Orlando conceded 118.9 points per 100 possessions during the defeat, including a 44-point second quarter in which Atlanta recorded a 146.7 offensive rating.
Orlando surrendered 60 points in the paint and sent the Hawks to the free-throw line 36 times. Head coach Sean Sweeney, hired partly to re-establish the defense, emphasized that the squad is still adapting to a new defensive scheme at full game speed. Players including Wagner and center Goga Bitadze noted that Thursday's practice focused on communication, positioning, and adhering to core defensive principles ahead of their next game.
