John Voita introduces a weekly series tracking Phoenix Suns center Khaman Maluach's defensive development through combined rebounds, blocks, and steals per 36 minutes. The 20-year-old big man is positioned for increased playing time in his second NBA season following an injury to Mark Williams. With high-usage offensive starters surrounding him, Maluach's primary path to contributing is expected to come through defense and rebounding.
Voita notes that Maluach ranked among the NBA's top five centers in that combined defensive metric last season, averaging 15.0 per 36 minutes across limited action. Through three preseason games, Maluach has sustained a similar rate at 14.9 per 36 minutes, showing noticeable improvement in his positioning and comfort on the glass after an unsteady start.
