Former Bucks coach Doc Rivers says Giannis Antetokounmpo "didn't want to be the bad guy" when he was trying to seek a trade out of Milwaukee last season.

Former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers stated on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" that Giannis Antetokounmpo wanted to leave the franchise without being perceived as the "bad guy." Rivers claimed Antetokounmpo avoided publicly requesting a trade so team leadership would instead initiate the move. Antetokounmpo was ultimately traded to the Miami Heat along with Bobby Portis during the summer.
Rivers also reflected on the tactical challenges of coaching Antetokounmpo, pointing out issues with execution and leadership. Antetokounmpo was dealt to Miami for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and draft picks. Rivers, who departed the Bucks following the 2025-26 season, confirmed he has no plans to coach again.
