Gregg Popovich marries ex-wife of former Spurs assistant coach

Former San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich married Mary Barth Budenholzer on September 16 in Texas, according to a marriage license obtained by TMZ. Barth Budenholzer was previously married to current Phoenix Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer, who worked as an assistant coach alongside Popovich in San Antonio from 1996 to 2013.

Popovich, now the Spurs president of basketball operations, lost his first wife, Erin, to illness in 2018 after 41 years of marriage. He retired from coaching in 2025 due to health complications following a mild stroke in November 2024. Mike and Mary Budenholzer finalized their divorce in 2016.
