Atlanta Falcons rookie defensive tackle Anterio Thompson announced that his football career has ended due to a previously unknown genetic mutation in his spinal cord. The 24-year-old revealed on Instagram that medical professionals informed him he can never play football again. Thompson had been placed on Atlanta's reserve/non-football injury list prior to training camp and has not practiced with the team since the spring.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of the University of Washington, Thompson joined the Falcons after a collegiate career spanning several schools. The discovery of the condition occurred shortly after the draft, cutting short his NFL career before playing a single snap.
