Key Things to Know
  • Sam Franklin Jr. received a one-game suspension without pay for allegedly spitting at an opponent in Week 6.
  • Franklin's agents strongly denied the allegation and confirmed he is appealing the league's ruling.
  • C.J. Gardner-Johnson was also suspended for a game after being ejected for spitting in the same contest.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin Jr. has received a one-game suspension without pay for allegedly spitting at Las Vegas Raiders offensive lineman DJ Glaze during Buffalo's Week 6 victory. The NFL cited an unsportsmanlike conduct violation occurring late in the fourth quarter following an extra point. Franklin is appealing the decision, with his representation issuing a statement firmly denying the allegation and expecting him to be fully exonerated during the hearing.

Franklin is the second Bills player penalized for spitting in that contest, following C.J. Gardner-Johnson's one-game suspension for an incident involving Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. Buffalo has a bye week, meaning any upheld suspension would take effect in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Joe Brady previously stated the team would not add further internal discipline.
