Key Things to Know
  • The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin Jr. one game without pay for spitting.
  • Franklin is appealing the ruling, which stems from an incident in Buffalo's 33-30 win over Las Vegas.
  • Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was also suspended one game for spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
The Story in 60 Seconds

The NFL has issued a one-game unpaid suspension to Buffalo Bills defensive back and special teams captain Sam Franklin Jr. for a spitting incident during Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The violation occurred with 1:32 remaining in Buffalo's 33-30 victory following a Raiders extra point. Franklin is appealing the suspension under NFL bylaws governing unsportsmanlike conduct.

Franklin is the second Bills player suspended for spitting in that contest, following a similar one-game ban handed to safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson for spitting toward tight end Brock Bowers. Unless his appeal succeeds, Franklin will be sidelined for Buffalo's Week 8 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens following their bye week.
