The Detroit Lions have parted ways with veteran defensive back Jalen Mills, releasing him from the practice squad on Tuesday as the team navigates its bye week, via the NFL transaction wire.
The Detroit Lions released 11-year veteran defensive back Jalen Mills from their practice squad on Tuesday during their bye week. The 32-year-old had exhausted his three permitted standard practice-squad elevations, most recently playing in the Week 5 victory against the Arizona Cardinals. Because keeping him active would require signing him to the 53-man active roster, Detroit decided against offering a new contract.
Mills initially rejoined the Lions in September 2026 to provide secondary depth following a season-ending foot injury to starting safety Avonte Maddox. With Brian Branch progressing toward a return and the bye week allowing time to reassess depth, Detroit opted to part ways with the Super Bowl LII champion as he enters free agency.
