NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Wednesday that the league welcomes an investigation into the Philadelphia Eagles' handling of quarterback Jalen Hurts' blood clots. The NFL Players Association requested a formal review after Hurts was cleared to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars despite an ultrasound in London revealing a superficial clot. Goodell reiterated that established protocols were properly followed according to chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss the remainder of the season following a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni defended the team's medical staff, noting complete faith in their care. Additionally, U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester sent a letter to Goodell requesting details on the league's blood clot protocols and clearance procedures.
