Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans announced on Wednesday that he is taking over defensive play-calling duties following an 0-4 start to the season. The decision strips play-calling responsibilities from defensive coordinator Matt Burke. Ryans cited a need to streamline on-field communication as the primary reason for making the switch ahead of Houston's matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
Ryans originally handed play-calling to Burke after an 0-3 start in 2025, which sparked a turnaround leading to a 12-5 finish. Despite ranking fourth against the run and tallying 14 sacks led by Will Anderson Jr., Houston's pass defense currently ranks 26th in the league after allowing 260 yards per game.
