Jacksonville Jaguars legend Jimmy Smith expressed support for comments made by former NBA player Joe Johnson expressing skepticism over Travis Hunter's ability to play both offense and defense in the NFL. Johnson argued on the Nightcap Podcast that the transition from college to professional football is difficult and requires significant adjustment, a stance Smith endorsed publicly on social media.

The Jaguars traded four draft picks, including two first-rounders, to select Hunter second overall. Despite GM James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen planning for Hunter to play both ways, his early 2026 season usage has heavily favored defense, seeing far more snaps at cornerback than wide receiver against both the Browns and Broncos.
