The Chiefs’ season so far is looking bleak after back-to-back losses. First, they suffered an embarrassing 20-3 loss against the Seahawks, and now, despite having a chance to beat the Broncos, a false start call ended their hopes. The loss…

Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil criticized a controversial false start penalty that erased a potential game-winning touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Rashee Rice against the Denver Broncos. Trailing 28-24 with four seconds remaining, the Chiefs thought they had taken the lead before officials ruled right tackle Jaylon Moore moved prior to the snap. Vermeil argued that the league is being over-officiated and questioned deciding the game on such a minor movement.
The penalty pushed Kansas City back five yards to the 6-yard line, where Mahomes was sacked on the subsequent final play to seal the Broncos' 28-24 victory. Current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes both voiced frustration regarding the call, noting the movement was barely noticeable. Penalties proved costly throughout the contest for Kansas City, which accumulated 11 penalties for 105 yards.
