Kyle Sloter spent years chasing quarterback jobs in the NFL, USFL, and XFL. Minnesota handed him one of his bigger preseason auditions. Sloter made eight preseason appearances for the Vikings across 2018 and 2019.
Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter revealed on The Victory Degree podcast that the team's staff once instructed him to perform worse during the preseason. Sloter claimed he was told to do less to avoid creating competition or controversy against the starting quarterback, particularly given the large guaranteed contract tied to the starter.
While Sloter did not name the starter, reports suggest he was likely referring to Kirk Cousins, who held a fully guaranteed $84 million deal at the time. Sloter, who made eight preseason appearances across 2018 and 2019 before being waived, stated he rejected the staff's advice because he wanted to compete.
