The announcement comes months after Russini resigned from The Athletic in April following an internal investigation into her personal conduct. Russini has reportedly told league figures that she plans to return to sports media immediately.

The resignation occurred after photographs surfaced showing Russini with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort. In September, The Athletic determined that Russini violated newsroom standards, though the investigation found no direct evidence that she used her journalistic platform to improperly promote Vrabel. Vrabel remains the head coach of the Patriots.
