Jameis Winston scored in a short-yardage role at Houston, and the Giants can retain that package without reopening the starting job.

Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media argues that the New York Giants should retain a dedicated short-yardage package for backup quarterback Jameis Winston without displacing starter J.J. McCarthy. Winston recorded four carries for four yards and a touchdown on sneaks, while also executing a 19-yard handoff to Cam Skattebo, during New York's 27-21 overtime victory against the Houston Texans.
Wilson maintains that McCarthy should remain the primary passer after completing 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards in his first Giants start. The writer notes that utilizing Winston in situational roles provides offensive variety without reopening a debate over who leads the starting offense.
