Michael DiPietro’s first NHL shutout carried a personal meaning on Hockey Fights Cancer night as the Bruins goalie honored his late mother.

Boston Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro earned his first NHL shutout on Thursday, stopping all 28 shots in a 6-0 win over the Nashville Predators at TD Garden. The milestone carried deep personal significance for DiPietro because it occurred on the team's Hockey Fights Cancer night, after he lost his mother to cancer at age five.
The 27-year-old made seven high-danger saves during the victory after spending years working through the ECHL and AHL to reach Boston's roster. Following the performance, DiPietro stated that he simply wanted to make his family proud, and his teammates celebrated the achievement with a postgame water-bottle shower in the locker room.
