The Sabres were heavily rumored as a potential landing spot for Connor Hellebuyck before his trade to the New Jersey Devils, but Buffalo general manager Jarmo Kekalainen opted against the blockbuster NHL deal.

Buffalo Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen explained that the Winnipeg Jets' asking price for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was ultimately too steep for the team. Kekalainen noted that making such a massive move would have compromised Buffalo's ability to pursue other roster priorities. Hellebuyck was eventually traded to the New Jersey Devils after months of league-wide trade speculation.
Tim Daniels of Sabre Noise highlights that Buffalo instead prioritized preserving assets to target a top-line center, noting past pursuits of Robert Thomas and Dylan Larkin. Meanwhile, the Sabres are preparing to resume their three-goalie rotation among Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Colten Ellis, and Alex Lyon, with head coach Lindy Ruff stating Lyon is days away from his season debut following an injury.
