Defensive play will determine Axel Sandin-Pellikka’s future

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka enters a critical 2026-27 season to determine his long-term future with the organization. The 2023 first-round draft pick made the NHL roster out of training camp for the 2025-26 campaign following a successful tenure in Sweden. As a 20-year-old rookie, he recorded 21 points across 68 appearances in North America.

Sandin-Pellikka experienced a strong start to his rookie year, posting 13 points in his first 34 games while logging over 20 minutes in nine matches. However, his playing time tapered off as the grueling season progressed, ultimately leading to a reassignment to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins after Detroit acquired defenseman Justin Faulk before the trade deadline.
