Edmonton Oilers icon Mark Messier strongly criticized the team's decision to hire former Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock as their new head coach. Speaking during an ESPN NHL Opening Night media call, Messier stated he was horrified and shocked by the hire, citing reports regarding how Babcock previously treated players throughout his career.

Babcock was dismissed from his prior two NHL jobs following allegations of bullying players, including being fired by the Columbus Blue Jackets before coaching a game. Fellow ESPN broadcaster Ray Ferraro offered a more measured perspective, noting that while Babcock is direct and demanding, the Oilers understand his coaching style.
