The Edmonton Oilers became the first team to have a full-time EBUG dress for an NHL game on Thursday night.

The Edmonton Oilers made NHL history on Thursday night by becoming the first team to dress a full-time emergency backup goaltender (EBUG). Brett Epp suited up as Edmonton's backup goalie behind starter Matt Tomkins during the Oilers' 5-4 loss against the Anaheim Ducks. Starting goaltender Tristan Jarry was unavailable for the contest due to illness.
A new NHL policy implemented for the current season requires all teams to maintain a full-time EBUG on their rosters. Under the new rules, these goaltenders travel with the team, wear jersey number 00, must have no prior NHL regular contract experience, and must meet strict limits regarding recent professional playing experience.
