Billy Heyen of Heavy argues that Edmonton Oilers forward Vasily Podkolzin's strong start to the 2026-27 season makes the Vancouver Canucks' decision to trade him appear baffling. The 25-year-old winger has recorded nine points, including seven goals and two assists, along with 27 hits across his first six games while averaging over 19 minutes of ice time per game.

Vancouver originally selected Podkolzin with the tenth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft before trading him to Edmonton in August 2024 for a 2025 fourth-round draft pick. Heyen notes that Vancouver used the pick on David Lewandowski, who is currently playing in the WHL.
