The Montreal Canadiens entered the 2026-27 season with plenty of optimism surrounding their goaltending situation. After an impressive playoff run last spring, Jakub Dobes appeared ready to take another step forward and establish himself as the team’s starting goaltender.
The Hockey Writers argues that the Montreal Canadiens need improved performances from goaltender Jakub Dobes following a difficult start to the 2026-27 season. Through his first four starts, Dobes recorded a 1-2-1 record alongside a 4.63 goals-against average and an .842 save percentage, despite signing a three-year contract extension worth nearly $5.4 million annually.
Dobes' struggles coincide with the strong play of rookie Jacob Fowler, who posted a 1.91 GAA and two wins after replacing the injured Samuel Montembeault. The outlet notes that Montreal faces a looming roster dilemma once Montembeault returns, increasing the pressure on Dobes to quickly rebound.
