The Montreal Canadiens have an interesting situation developing between the pipes, and for longtime fans, it might bring back memories of a familiar goaltending debate.
The Montreal Canadiens may face a future goaltending dilemma reminiscent of the historic Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak debate, according to The Hockey Writers. Early in the 2026-27 season, young goaltender Jacob Fowler has impressed with a 3-1-0 record after being recalled to replace the injured Samuel Montembeault. Meanwhile, 25-year-old Jakub Dobes has struggled through his first four starts with a 1-2-1 record, a 4.63 goals-against average, and an .842 save percentage.
The Hockey Writers suggests that if Fowler continues to solidify himself as the long-term starter, general manager Kent Hughes could eventually consider trading Dobes to address other organizational needs. With Montembeault expected to return, Montreal could carry three NHL-caliber goaltenders, though the outlet cautions management against rushing into any decisions after only a few games.
