The Story in 60 Seconds

Jacob Fowler is making a strong case to become the Montreal Canadiens' starting goaltender following an impressive start to the 2026-27 NHL season. Recalled from the Laval Rocket after an injury to Samuel Montembeault, the 21-year-old goaltender has compiled a 5-1-0 record, alongside a 1.79 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage across his first six games.

William Bourget of The Hockey Writers argues that Fowler may represent Montreal's best current option in net as well as their long-term future. With backup Jakub Dobes struggling with a 4.47 goals-against average through five starts, Bourget suggests the Canadiens could face a difficult roster dilemma and might temporarily carry three goaltenders once Montembeault returns to health.
