The New York Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-0 on Saturday, Oct. 3, handing New Jersey their first defeat of the season. After a scoreless first period, the Islanders scored three goals in the second period and added three more in the third. Devils goaltender Nico Daws allowed five goals in his first start of the year before an empty-net goal sealed the shutout.
The Hockey Writers analyzed the loss, emphasizing Daws's difficult outing, New Jersey's special teams struggles, and the need for perspective early in the 82-game campaign. Head coach Sheldon Keefe's squad failed to convert on five power-play opportunities and conceded a power-play goal. The Devils will look to rebound when they host the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
