The result marked the Devils' third consecutive victory decided in overtime or a shootout.
Evan Rodrigues and Declan Chisholm scored for New Jersey in the opening two periods, while Anthony Duclair, Matthew Schaeffer, Simon Holmstrom, and William Eklund scored for the Islanders. Third-period goals from Luke Evangelista and Dougie Hamilton tied the game, overcoming a 50-shot offensive push against Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin and shaky defensive stretches in front of Jake Allen.
