The New York Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-0 at UBS Arena in their home opener on Saturday. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin stopped all 36 shots to earn the shutout, while Devils goaltender Nico Daws allowed six goals on 32 shots in his first start of the season. The Devils went 0-for-5 on the power play during the loss.
New York broke open the scoreless game in the second period with goals from Simon Holmstrom, Brayden Schenn, and Bo Horvat. The Islanders added three more goals in the final frame courtesy of Victor Eklund, Ondrej Palat, and a shorthanded tally by Casey Cizikas. New Jersey star Jack Hughes left the game in the second period after crashing into the boards.
