The New Jersey Devils were facing a salary cap crunch on Sunday with a possible injury to Anthony Mantha. A surprise trade will give them some relief.

The New Jersey Devils traded goaltender Remi Poirier to the Washington Capitals on Sunday in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. Poirier was initially claimed off waivers from the Dallas Stars prior to the season, but he saw minimal practice time and no game action before New Jersey later acquired Connor Hellebuyck.
The trade provides necessary salary cap relief following an injury to forward Anthony Mantha against the Vegas Golden Knights. The move leaves New Jersey with nearly $950,000 in cap space, potentially opening a roster spot for Lenni Hameenaho.
