The New York Islanders opened their season with a 2-1 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto built a 2-0 lead through goals from Colton Sissons and Easton Cowan, while Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin stopped 24 shots in the loss.
New York's lone goal came shorthanded in the third period courtesy of Emil Heineman off an assist from Bo Horvat. Despite firing 27 shots, the Islanders struggled on special teams, going 0-for-4 on the power play as head coach Peter DeBoer shuffled offensive lines throughout the game.
