The NY Islanders keep taking injury blows a few games into the new season

The NY Islanders are dealing with multiple significant injuries just four games into the 2026-27 NHL season. Mat Barzal missed all of training camp after re-aggravating a knee injury, while defenseman Alexander Romanov suffered a torn ACL that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Additionally, captain Bo Horvat sustained a head injury during Thursday's game, and defenseman Isaiah George suffered a long-term injury playing for the Hamilton Hammers.
Romanov's season-ending injury creates a major hole on defense, potentially opening the door for Kashawn Aitcheson or Marshall Warren to earn a call-up alongside Scott Mayfield and Matt Kessell. At forward, Horvat could miss time, which would leave the Islanders without their top two centers, though the team could shift Schenn back to center to fill the gap.
