Ottawa Senators defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo exited Monday night's game against the New Jersey Devils after sustaining an upper-body injury. The incident took place midway through the first period when Devils forward Anthony Mantha hit Matinpalo from behind into the boards. Mantha was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding, and the Senators subsequently ruled Matinpalo out for the remainder of the contest after just 2:19 of ice time.
The 28-year-old blueliner had appeared in each of Ottawa's first six games of the season prior to the injury. In his second full NHL campaign with the Senators, Matinpalo entered the contest averaging 17:45 of ice time with a plus-2 rating.
