The Ottawa Senators placed 23-year-old goaltender Leevi Merilainen on waivers on Thursday. Last season, Merilainen played 20 games for Ottawa, recording an 8-10-1 record, a 3.51 goals-against average, and an .860 save percentage.
Ottawa's move comes amid a crowded goaltending depth chart featuring established starter Linus Ullmark and Samuel Ersson, who signed a two-year, $4.4-million contract over the summer. If Merilainen clears waivers, he remains an organizational depth option for the Senators.
