Key Things to Know
  • Nikita Kucherov reportedly would not accept an extension from the Tampa Bay Lightning even at $20 million annually.
  • The fractured relationship between Kucherov and the Lightning reportedly stems from poor communication and respect rather than finances.
  • Kucherov submitted a 10-team trade list earlier in the year as widespread league interest develops.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Nikita Kucherov reportedly would not sign a contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning even if offered six years at $20 million annually. Following Kucherov's comments that strained relations stem from poor communication and respect rather than money, reports indicate the damaged relationship may no longer be mendable. The Lightning previously made offers of four years at $15 million per season in July and six years at $15 million in September.

Kucherov submitted a 10-team trade list during the summer, and at least 25 NHL teams have reportedly expressed potential interest in acquiring him. While clubs such as the New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Montreal Canadiens are monitored as potential suitors, several teams are reportedly more inclined to pursue him in free agency rather than trading top assets.
