Elliotte Friedman confirmed the contract ask from Nikita Kucherov, which could explain Tampa's hesitation and tease what's next for teams.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on his 32 Thoughts podcast that rumors of Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov seeking a six-year, $120 million contract extension ($20 million per season) are likely accurate. Friedman noted that the massive financial commitment may deter several potential trade suitors from acquiring the 33-year-old forward if an extension is required.
Kevin Weekes reported that Tampa Bay initially offered Kucherov around $13 million annually before raising the proposal to $15 million following recent mega-deals for Leo Carlsson and Cale Makar. Kucherov reportedly requested a trade from the Lightning due to the team dragging its feet during contract negotiations.
