Kucherov’s Free Agency Plan Puts Trade Suitors in a Bind

Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov reportedly intends to test free agency on July 1 rather than signing an early extension with an acquiring team, according to insider Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. The reported stance comes after Kucherov requested a trade following contract discussions with Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois, who told him he was free to explore free agency.

Kucherov's agent Dan Milstein confirmed the forward intends to sign with a new club on July 1 regardless of whether he is traded beforehand. Consequently, any potential trade would likely treat Kucherov strictly as a rental player, which would reduce the trade return value for Tampa Bay.
