On Friday night, news broke that Nikita Kucherov had requested a trade from the only NHL team he’s ever known. Three days later, Kucherov shed light on what led to his decision.

Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov addressed his recent trade request, explaining that his decision stemmed from poor communication and a lack of respect rather than financial reasons. Kucherov stated that he only had two conversations over four months with general manager Julien BriseBois, who told him he was free to leave in free agency on July 1.
Kucherov noted that he personally informed his teammates before the trade request became public and reaffirmed his commitment to helping the team win while he remains on the roster. The 33-year-old forward has spent his entire 14-year NHL career with Tampa Bay, winning two Stanley Cups.
