The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost a major blueliner.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe exited during the first period of a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets following a freak accident. McCabe was attempting a check near the boards on Blue Jackets winger Kent Johnson, whose lifted stick struck McCabe directly in the face. The Maple Leafs quickly ruled him out for the rest of the contest after he did not return to the bench for the second period.
The full severity of McCabe's injury remains unconfirmed, with head coach Jim Hiller expected to provide further status updates following the game. The article notes that an extended absence would significantly weaken Toronto's defensive depth, especially with veteran defenseman Chris Tanev already sidelined.
