John Tavares will return to the Toronto Maple Leafs' lineup Saturday, but he'll be taking on a different role as he shifts to the wing.

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller announced that John Tavares will return to the lineup on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens in a new role on the wing. Tavares is slated to play alongside centre Nick Paul and winger William Nylander. Hiller explained that shifting the 36-year-old veteran to the wing aims to help him generate more offense while allowing Paul to handle more defensive responsibilities down low.
Writer Matthew Amos argues that while transitioning Tavares to the wing makes sense to prolong his offensive productivity, it creates a concern by elevating Paul into the second-line centre role. Amos views Paul as an imperfect solution for a Stanley Cup contender, noting that the move highlights Toronto's ongoing need for a long-term second-line centre.
