The Toronto Maple Leafs have done their due diligence on Simon Edvinsson, and that's why there's a problem making a deal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have inquired about Detroit Red Wings restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson, according to insider David Pagnotta. Toronto has been pursuing defensive help following an injury to Chris Tanev earlier in the season. However, Detroit's asking price for the 23-year-old blueliner is reportedly too high for the Maple Leafs to justify surrendering their limited prospect capital.
Nestor Quixtan notes that completing a trade would also present significant salary cap complications for Toronto. Even if a permanent deal were agreed upon, Edvinsson would require a substantial new contract that the Maple Leafs likely cannot accommodate without moving an existing high-salary player.
