The Toronto Maple Leafs have a new core four with the emergence of one particular player.

Writer Stephen Nixon argues that the Toronto Maple Leafs have established a new "Core Four" following the emergence of 2026 first-overall draft pick Gavin McKenna. McKenna registered his first career NHL goal alongside an assist during a comeback victory against the Nashville Predators, snapping a three-game scoreless drought to begin his rookie campaign.
Nixon notes that McKenna joins established stars Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and William Nylander to replace the void left by Mitch Marner's departure. Matthews contributed one goal and three assists in the contest, while Tavares also scored, leading Nixon to argue the refreshed core provides new momentum ahead of a difficult four-game schedule.
